What is a mommy makeover?

A “Mommy makeover” is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the breasts and abdomen in women whose bodies have been affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding. Pregnancy can cause looseness in the abdomen and muscle separation, so the belly still looks pregnant after childbirth ( this is known as diastasis recti).

Why should you choose the surgeons at Hill Country Plastic Surgery?

At Hill Country Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons have years of experience in the academic setting, tertiary hospital care, and in performing some of the most complex procedures in the field. Dr. Scott Farber specializes in facial aesthetic surgery, drawing on his extensive experience and training to restore youthful and natural contours. Dr. Amita Shah is highly experienced in facial plastic surgery, with extensive years of training and experience.

A personalized, custom procedure at Hill Country Plastic Surgery

A mommy makeover is not a cookie-cutter breast and abdomen procedure. To us, it is a set of body-contouring procedures that help you achieve the look you envision, along with the functionality of your body. This usually involves breast and body surgery but may also include liposuction or lifts of other parts of the body.

There are different ways to perform the procedures, and we choose the technique to fit your body and your goals. To achieve this, we spend extra time establishing your goals and expectations for your mommy makeover in San Antonio, so you are ecstatic about your results. We will not recommend procedures that you don’t need or are unsafe.

How many surgeries will I need in a mommy makeover?

Many patients want to do multiple procedures in one surgery if possible, to consolidate recovery time. Surgeries that involve more than one procedure are done with two board-certified plastic surgeons – a rare benefit. We do this to help reduce the operative time and improve safety. Through this approach, we are able to do more procedures in one surgery safely and not require overnight stays or extended care.

An extraordinary level of comfort – we care.

Every part of your mommy makeover will be optimized for not only the final result, but to make the entire experience of being a patient easier. We have a close-knit team at the office ,and we all take time to make sure all of your questions about the surgery and everything around it are answered to your total satisfaction.

During surgery, we pay attention to all aspects of easing your recovery. This includes not using drains on most body contouring surgeries (much more comfortable!), using nerve blocks, and medications administered before and after surgery to help with pain and nausea.

Further, our communication systems are designed so that you always have easy access to your surgeon and our staff. We recommend lymphatic massage after surgery to help with reduction of swelling and improvements in comfort, starting one week after surgery.

What sets Hill Country Plastic Surgery apart from other practices?

We believe the relationship between patient and surgeon is at the core of every successful procedure. That's why we take the time to get to know each of our patients and understand their unique goals. What are some of the advantages of a mommy makeover at Hill Country Plastic Surgery?

  • Recovery Time: patients will need assistance right after surgery but after a week, most people are ready to resume their usual daily activities and movement
  • Less Pain: no drain technique and TAP blocks (a new kind of pain management for abdominal surgery) significantly reduce the need for help after surgery:
  • Safety: no need for an extended time being under anesthesia when two surgeons are performing your procedure.
  • Liposuction: Liposuction of the flanks is included with every tummy tuck. We are also able to include liposuction of the arms, neck, back, legs, or other areas. In addition, we have frequently done fat transfer to the buttocks, breasts, or other areas.

What surgeries can be done to address the abdomen in the mommy makeover?

  • Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) – removes excess and saggy skin, and tightens abdominal muscles for the repair of diastasis recti
  • Liposuction – removes excess skin

At Hill Country Plastic Surgery, we offer efficient and effective combination surgery (multiple procedures in one surgery) which results in a safer procedure and more rapid recovery.

Can a mommy makeover take the place of diet and exercise?

A mommy makeover is not a substitute for weight loss and exercise. Because fluctuations in weight can affect the results of these procedures, it is best if performed when you are at a stable weight and do not have any plans to get pregnant.

Am I a good candidate for a mommy makeover?

Good candidates for this procedure are at their ideal body weight and have been stable at that weight. You should not be breastfeeding at the time of surgery because it will change the size and shape of the breasts. You should also be generally healthy, a non-smoker, and not planning on any additional pregnancies.

How is a mommy makeover performed?

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical center or a hospital.

  • Abdominoplasty: the abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is begun by making an incision on the lower part of your abdomen and around your belly button. The area between the abdominal muscles is then sutured together. The extra skin of the belly is removed, and the belly button is placed higher on the abdomen.
  • Breast Augmentation: If you are receiving breast augmentation surgery, it will be performed by placing an implant through an incision under the breast. If a lift or reduction is needed, a vertical or anchor incision is used to reshape the breast tissue and skin.

All the incisions are closed with absorbable sutures that are slowly broken down by the body. This means that no sutures will need to be removed later. You may or may not have drains after your procedure. You will be placed in a supportive bra and abdominal compression garment. You will be measured for these garments prior to your surgery.

Where will my surgery take place?

The procedure may take place at an accredited ambulatory surgical center, or at a hospital on an outpatient basis. The choice of location is based on many factors including your safety and quality of care.

Will I stay overnight after my procedure?

After a mommy makeover, most patients can go home the same day. If we are doing an excision of a large amount of skin or additional procedures, you may need to stay overnight in the hospital or surgical center.

How do I know which surgery is right for me?

When you consult with our board-certified plastic surgeon, they will go over all your options and provide you with their professional recommendations. In general, a mommy makeover is a good option if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are at your ideal weight
  • You have completed breastfeeding
  • You do not plan on any additional pregnancies
  • You have been at a stable weight for at least six months.
  • Additionally, it is important that you be nicotine free prior to surgery, as nicotine can cause severe complications such as death of the abdominal skin and wound dehiscence (breaking apart).

Additionally:

  • If you have any bleeding or clotting problems, it is important that you tell us so we can work with your hematologist to determine if this is a safe operation for you.
  • If you have significant medical problems, we will work with your physicians to determine if you can safely undergo surgery.

Will insurance cover my mommy makeover?

A mommy makeover is a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance.

When can I return to normal activities?

You can generally return to normal activities after 6 weeks. If you had an abdominal plication (muscle tightening) performed, you may want to limit your abdominal core workouts until 3 months after your surgery. When resuming activities, it is recommended that you start slow and wear an abdominal binder. Then you can slowly increase your activity level.

How much does a mommy makeover in San Antonio cost?

The costs are variable between patients and depend on the amount of surgery that is needed. When determining the affordability of the surgery, the cumulative cost of the procedure should be evaluated. The total cost includes:

  • Anesthesia fees
  • Hospital or surgical center facility fees
  • Medical test
  • Compression garments
  • Prescriptions
  • The surgeon’s fee
