She profoundly believes that patient care doesn’t stop at surgery. Preparation before surgery, recovery, and adapting to the surgical changes are equally important in her process to ensure she achieves optimal outcomes.

Background and education

Dr. Amita Shah is from a multi-ethnic military family and calls San Antonio her home. She has made San Antonio her home, graduating from Robert G. Cole High School on Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

Biomedical engineering insights that matter in plastic surgery.

Dr. Amita Shah research training in biomedical engineering specializes in biomaterials which gives her unique perspective when evaluating products and treatments for her patients. She continues to serve as an adjunct professor in the Biomedical Engineering PhD program at UTSA.

She mentors graduate students and serves as a research consultant. Her interests also include clinical outcomes research, health literacy and patient experience, and quality and process improvement.

Serving injured children: Pediatric burn reconstruction program at UT Health.

While at UT Health, Dr. Shah started the pediatric burn reconstruction program, which she continues to lead. Her goal is to help children with burn scars develop into the people they are meant to be and not allow scars to define them. Dr. Shah has often been an invited presenter and teacher at national conferences on the topics of laser therapy for scar treatments. She is an active member of multiple professional organizations, such as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Burn Association, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

On a personal note…

Outside of work, Dr. Amita Shah is a talented, classically trained pianist who plays piano for worship services on the weekend. She is also the mentor for the SA People Project, a humanism in medicine storytelling project with medical students at UT Health San Antonio.
