What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is over development of male breast tissue and fat, and can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, obesity, steroid use, marijuana use, metabolic disorders, or as a side effect of certain medications. In some cases, the excess tissue fails to respond to diet or exercise, and becomes a stressful burden. Male breast reduction surgery can remove the unwanted excess breast tissue to create a more defined appearance of the chest.
Large male breasts can be a source of low self-esteem, and men who have gynecomastia are often unwilling to go without a shirt in public. Male breast reduction surgery may involve liposuction, surgical removal of excess glandular tissue and skin, or both. The end result is a firmer, toned, and masculine upper chest that helps you feel more confident without a shirt on.
What to Expect During Your Consultation for Male Breast Reduction Surgery
During your consultation, Dr. Farber or Dr. Shah will examine you in detail and review the factors causing your gynecomastia. They will create a surgical plan with you which may include tissue removal, liposuction, and skin tightening.
Your results will be completely natural looking and you will no longer need to wear loose fitting shirts to disguise the excess breast tissue. This procedure can be life altering for men who have struggled with an excess of breast tissue and low self esteem for years.
How is Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) Surgery Performed?
Gynecomastia (male breast reduction) surgeries are performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient setting. Dr. Farber or Dr. Shah will make a small incision where the scar will be imperceptible and then remove glandular tissue and suction out fat using a liposuction machine. After the procedure is complete, you will have a slim, contoured, and more masculine chest. For patients with a great deal of excess skin, the scar is hidden under the shadow of the pectoral muscle. This allows the surgeon to remove the extra skin without creating an obvious scar.
What to Expect During Your Consultation Visit
During the initial consultation with your surgeon at Hill Country Plastic Surgery, we will discuss your concerns and goals before recommending treatment options that are tailored specifically to your needs. Prior to your consultation, we recommend that you review the procedures on our website so you are familiar with the terms we will be using during our discussion.
Once we identify your concerns and surgical goals, we will discuss all of the treatment options that are available to you. Every patient is unique and we will develop a tailored surgical plan that addresses your specific goals. In addition, we will thoroughly review your medical history, surgical history, medications, allergies, family medical history, and other important details. It is very important that we obtain accurate information in all of these areas as it may impact the outcome of your surgery.
While discussing different treatment options, we will perform a physical exam and take measurements that are necessary for planning for your surgery. Pre-operative (before surgery) photos will be taken either at your initial consultation, or during your pre-operative visit.
After your consultation, you will receive access to your notes on the patient portal in addition to information about your specific surgery. If you have not activated your patient portal, this can be done at your appointment by asking any of our staff to assist you. If you have questions after your appointment, you can contact our office or message us through the patient portal. Some patients will require medical clearance from their primary care physician or a specialist or additional tests before undergoing surgery.
Once you have determined that you would like to have surgery and have completed any clearances and tests that were requested, contact our office at (210) 658-3555 to schedule a pre-operative appointment with one of our surgeons.
How much does male breast reduction surgery cost?
The cost of gynecomastia surgery varies from patient to patient. All bodies are different, and some need more correction than others. It is recommended that you come in to see the surgeons at Hill Country Plastic Surgery for your customized male breast reduction surgery consultation.
What is the recovery time after male breast reduction surgery?
Post-operative discomfort is usually minimal. Sometimes drains are used, and they are usually removed after 2-3 days in the office. We recommend that you wear a pressure garment for 1-2 weeks after surgery to minimize fluid accumulation, maintain the slim contour, and to promote proper healing.
When can I return to work after male breast reduction surgery?
You will be able to return to work and resume your usual daily activities or work within a few days of surgery. In terms of exercise, we ask that you refrain from strenuous workouts until about 4-6 weeks after surgery to minimize complications.
