Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently requested cosmetic procedures worldwide. Also known as a boob job, breast augmentation has come a long way over the years, and surgeons can make dramatic improvements in the shape and size of the breasts.

Most patients are satisfied with their breast augmentation, but it’s essential to do your due diligence and determine if the procedure is appropriate for your needs.

Ideal Candidates For A Boob Job

There are several critical requirements for your surgeon to consider you an ideal candidate for breast augmentation:

Good Overall Health

You need to be in good health, which means no infections, serious illnesses, or untreated cancer. If you have medical problems, talk to your surgeon about them so they can determine if now is the right time for your breast augmentation.

It’s especially important not to have any medical issues that could cause bleeding or delay healing. Your surgeon will conduct a thorough medical examination during the consultation process to ensure you are in good enough health for surgery.

Small Or Sagging Breasts

If you have breasts that are too small, sagging, elongated, flattened, or asymmetrical, you could be a great candidate for breast augmentation.

Also, women who were pregnant and are dissatisfied with the shape and volume of the breasts may be ideal candidates.

If you have a lot of sagging, you may also need a breast lift. Fortunately, your surgeon can do breast augmentation and a breast lift in one procedure. This allows you to save time and money as you get all recoveries done at once.

You also may take the opportunity to have other procedures, including liposuction and a tummy tuck.

Non-Smoker

Most plastic surgeons want you to be a non-smoker. This is because smoking causes problems with healing and can delay the recovery process.

You should quit for at least one month before and after your breast augmentation if you smoke.

Asymmetrical Breasts

Patients with one breast smaller than the other can have this condition corrected with breast augmentation.

Positive And Realistic Mindset

Breast augmentation will permanently change your appearance, so you need to be in a healthy frame of mind when you decide to go through with it.

Also, remember that breast augmentation can make a big difference in your appearance. However, it cannot make you look like another person or fix any body image issues you have.

It’s essential to have realistic expectations about your surgery, so listen to the surgeon’s assessment and what they say are possible with breast augmentation.

Understands The Recovery Process

Breast augmentation requires an extensive recovery. Therefore, you should expect to take it easy and rest for two or three weeks. Many patients can return to work after two weeks or so, but if your job is physical, you may need additional time off.

You should not engage in vigorous physical activity for at least a month, but going for a daily walk is good for your recovery. Also, you will need help for at least two weeks if you have small children and no heavy lifting during this period.

Having Breast Augmentation For Yourself

It’s critical to have breast enhancement for yourself because you think it will improve your appearance and self-image. However, you should not have plastic surgery because a partner wants you to.

Who Isn’t A Good Candidate For A Boob Job?

Most people in good mental and physical health are good candidates for breast enhancement. But you may not be a good candidate if:

  • You are breastfeeding or pregnant
  • You are being treated for breast cancer or have an abnormal mammogram
  • You are sick or have any type of active infection
  • Your expectations for your appearance after breast augmentation are unrealistic

Breast Augmentation Recovery

After breast augmentation, you will need several weeks to recover. The recovery process will go faster if you follow these guidelines:

Don’t Wear Underwire Bras

Most women don’t want to wear an uncomfortable bra after a boob job, but there is another reason to avoid it. Underwire bras will irritate your skin and inflame the breast crease’s incisions.

A sports bra that is comfortable against the skin is better as the body recovers from breast augmentation.

Don’t Take Baths

You shouldn’t submerge the breasts in water until the incisions are completely healed; water in the tub or pool can introduce bacteria into the incisions.

It’s best to take quick showers for the first two or three weeks as the incisions heal.

Rest And Sleep On Your Back

After breast enhancement, it’s best to sleep on your back. Sleeping on your side or stomach will make the implants shift or droop, and it’s not comfortable, anyway.

Sleeping on your back also avoids irritating your incisions, which can delay the healing process.

Avoid Strenuous Activity

For the first four to six weeks, you should not lift anything that weighs more than 20 pounds, including children. Strenuous upper body activities may cause bleeding and complications.

However, going for a daily walk increases blood circulation and speeds recovery, so do that as soon as you feel up to it after surgery.

Now that you understand who is an ideal candidate for a boob job, you should talk to a board-certified plastic surgeon to determine the next steps.
