Why Is a Bra Necessary After Breast Augmentation?

Best Bra for AugmentationMany plastic surgeons consider the breast augmentation recovery to be nearly as important as the surgery itself. That’s because your recovery is when all of your surgeon’s work develops and heals — and it’s all got to heal properly in order for you to achieve your desired results.

This means that keeping everything in place is critical, and that’s where your post-surgical bra comes in.

The best bra for after augmentation will:

  • Improve circulation
  • Decrease swelling and inflammation
  • Protect incision sites from infection
  • Keep your breasts from shifting
  • Put equal pressure on all areas of your breasts
  • Reduce the buildup of fluid
  • Reduce your risk for a hematoma
  • Give you added comfort and support during healing

What to Look for in a Post Surgical Bra

Your first post surgical bra will be chosen by your plastic surgeon. It should be supportive, comfortable, adjustable, and breathable.

Post surgical bras will be wire free and will have adjustable straps. They will open in the front so they are easier to put on and take off.

Here are some recommendations for the best bras of various types after augmentation.

Best Post Surgical Bra After Breast Augmentation

Right after surgery, your surgeon will place you in bandages and a supportive post surgical bra. This will need to be worn around the clock for anywhere from several days to several weeks. The bra will be chosen by your surgeon based on your surgery, body type, and other factors.

Best Sports Bra After Breast Augmentation Surgery

After a period of time stipulated by your surgeon, you will be allowed to switch support garments and choose your own sports bra to wear.

Choose a sports bra with a front closure, adjustable straps, adequate support, breathable fabric, and overall comfort. It should not have an underwire.

Best Underwire Bra After Breast Augmentation

After several weeks more, you will be able to switch to an underwire bra if you choose. Only do this if the underwire bra is not irritating your incisions as this can sometimes be a problem.

Choose an underwire bra that is not too tight or restricting. It should not put undue pressure against your incision sites, which are usually located in the breast creases where the underwires rest.

Best Plunge Bra for Implants

After you are fully healed, you will be able to wear nearly any type of bra you choose.

Plunge bras of any sort should be acceptable as long as they are not too restricting or irritating to your incision sites or breasts overall. Plunge bras can make your new breasts look amazing!

What Bra to Sleep in After Breast Augmentation

Directly after your surgery, you will need to wear your post surgical bra during sleep. Once you are able to transition to a sports bra, you can wear that bra during sleep. Wearing a bra at night will keep your breasts from shifting or resting “out of place” for too long.

Tips for Sleeping After Breast Augmentation

Best bra for after augmentationAfter any breast surgery, you’ll need to follow your surgeon’s detailed instructions regarding sleeping. Most surgeons will have their patients sleep on their backs with the upper body elevated for at least several weeks.

At the beginning of your recovery, you’ll need to wear your bra during sleep as well. Some patients like to continue wearing their bra during sleep even toward the end of their recovery when it may not be absolutely necessary. Discuss this with your surgeon.

Here are some other sleeping tips for after breast augmentation:

  1. To aid in your comfort, purchase a wedge pillow to prop up your upper body.
  2. Pillows placed on either side of you can elevate and support your arms.
  3. Try to make sure you are adequately tired before bed. Napping during the day is good for your recovery, but if it interferes with nighttime sleep, try to avoid it.
  4. Make your sleeping space as comfortable as possible. Clean sheets and a comfortable atmosphere will improve your rest.

Other Breast Surgeries: Best Post Surgical Bra for Breast Reduction and Breast Lift Surgery

Getting breast reduction surgery, a breast lift, or another breast surgery? You’ll also need to wear a post surgical bra after these procedures.

Discuss what bra will be best for you with your surgeon. Most of the time, the requirements will be very similar to those of the best bra for after augmentation. Still, it’s always good to check with your surgeon as they will know best, and every procedure is unique.
